There's always a lively debate about which New Haven pizzeria is the best, but personally, I don't have a favorite. That said, I can confidently say that Frank Pepe's is absolutely delicious. If you're planning to visit, I recommend going during an off-peak time, as the lines can get pretty long--rain or shine. I always go during off peak hours, and we've consistently had quick, efficient service. The staff is friendly and welcoming, making every visit enjoyable. Depending on where you're sitting, you can even watch the pizza being made, adding to the casual, laid-back vibe. On one occasion, a friend from Florida had a lot of questions about the pizza-making process, and the staff was more than happy to share their knowledge. They gave us a great rundown of the history behind their famous pies, which made the experience even more memorable.

Stopped by Frank Pepe on a road trip to try their famous white clam pizza to go! It was my first time in New Haven and in CT so I didn't have any expectations. It turned out to be very tasty with strong savory clam flavors! Clam pieces were fresh and chewy for the most part. The other spices, sauce, and cheese didn't overpower the clams but rather enhanced the seafood aroma. Also loved how it wasn't too heavy. The dough and crust weren't that impressive but we also got ours to-go. You're welcomed to pick up additional plates and plastic utensils on your way out of the restaurant. It was pretty easy to order online and staff were helpful at instructing us the pick up location. Of note, on a weekend, our pick up time was about 1-1.5hr after placing the online order, and the lines looked pretty long in person, so I'd recommend planning your visit! There were two parking lots for customers, one was likely valet, as well as other street parking options. Would like to try their chowder and other pies next time I'm in the area!

Awesome service and great pizza and salad here. We loved our dinner here with no wait for a table. The atmosphere was pitch perfect for a pizza place. We bought en extra pizza to eat later, and it was still tasty the next day. We'll be back for more in the future.

Pepe's is the original New Haven pizza joint, opened in 1925. Sally's, opened by Pepe's sister and nephew over a decade later, is their biggest competitor. Searching online, I can't find a clear winner between the two (I'll come back to this later). I chose to go to Pepe's because it's the OG. I got in almost immediately, but I could tell they were preparing for a crowd to arrive. Everyone waits in line outside because the restaurant is small. The couple in front of me got referred to the venue next door, which is the super OG Pepe's, with the original coal oven. I got in almost immediately, to the secondary site that's right by the street (the pizza is the same for both places). I arrived around 11:45 on Sunday (they open at 11). I got a booth. I was served by Erica and she was AMAZING. I loved this girl immediately. She felt like New York, but I could be wrong. I know the New England coast can occasionally have that New York feel. She was down to earth, warm, welcoming, attentive, but not in a stuffy way. She was so cool she seemed like someone I would enjoy being friends with. Anyway, I got two small pies (they have a three small pie sampler for 45 if you wanna try a few). I got the original tomato pie, just crushed Italian tomatoes, grated pecorino Romano, and olive oil. I also got the small Margherita (crushed Italian tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, and basil). Both were great. I almost think I liked the tomato pie better. The sauce is so decadent, thick, almost a handshake between sweet and savory. If my research is correct, Pepe puts garlic in their crust, and I think this is true, as you get that sharp, spicy, nutty flavor with these slices. I also ordered a salad, which I thought would be a plain house salad. Nah, it was a HUGE salad that would probably serve 3-4. They have tons of toppings (meatballs, veggies, olives, shrimp, goat cheese, and more). They have fan favorites, with bacon and onion, pepperoni and hot cherry, they have chicken pies, a clam pie, white pizzas. I also had the sangria, which was tasty and refreshing. I haven't had Sally's. From what I hear, Sally's has a crispier crust and maybe the sauce is more intense? My original plan was to try both Pepe's and Sally's. Two things stopped me. By the time I left, around 12:20-12:30, huge numbers started to line up at Pepe's. The lines were getting long. One would assume it would be the same at Sally's. But the first, foremost reason I didn't hop down to Sally's, just 2/10 a mile away, is that I loved my time at Pepe's so much that I couldn't imagine anything better (and yes, I've had great pizza, from all over New York, Chicago, even St. Louis, Detroit, Philly etc). And even if you want to quibble over Dave Portnoy ratings (I can't stand the guy), which crust is crispier, which sauce is better--Pepe's simply did it for me. The people were great, Erica was awesome, I loved the food. I didn't need anything else.

Came in for lunch on a Monday and although there was a line to be seated, we only waited about 15 minutes. We ordered the half pitcher of sangria and an Amanti Della carne pizza (meatball, pepperoni, bacon and sausage). It was very delicious, but just a tad greasy. Our server was prompt and went an extra step, came out with the pizza before cutting it to make sure our "well done but not burnt" was to our liking. Perfect!

Definitely come hungry and you won't be disappointed! They had different sizing options - small, medium, large - and as we wanted to try more than one pizza, ordering 1 large and 1 medium was more than enough for 5 people. Would highly recommend the classic Tomato pie - what Frank Pepe's is known for beyond the clam pizza - super flavorful and warms your soul. You can get it with or without mozzarella on top - personally, I enjoyed it more without the mozzarella as it was more fresh and less greasy.

It's good, though we did have to wait a long time for our pizzas to come out. It was a Wednesday afternoon around 2:30, so I was surprised at how busy they still were. Regardless, we enjoyed the food. Service was attentive too. Both the Italian salad and Caesar salad are good. Nice assortment, seasoning. Portions are nice too for both the small and large salads. The clam pie was ok, but I've had more enjoyable clam pies, both in Connecticut and my own making. This one had a decent amount of clams on it, but was very heavy with raw garlic. Every bite made me feel a bit bleh. The Della Carne Pizza was really nice. Lots of fragrant meats on top, balanced amount of crust, cheese, etc. all good. The classic tomorrow pie with cheese is like standard (NY) cheese pizza, but with a thinner crust. It was ok. There isn't too much seating inside, so maybe takeout is a better option if it's prime time. There's a small bathroom inside for customers. They also have a parking lot. I live in a NY area where good pizza is everywhere, so I wasn't wow'd, but nonetheless, the food is good here.
